"Hello, President Obama " This is Moe, down here in Almeda, Texas. I am callin' to tell yal that we are officially declaring war on ya!" "Well Moe," Barack replied, How big is your army ?"

"Right now," said Moe, "there is myself, my cousin, Jim Bob, my neighbor J. R. and the whole shuffle board team from Shorty’s. That makes seven!"

Barack paused. "I must tell you Moe that I have one million men in my army."

"Wow," said Moe. "I'll have ta call ya back!" Sure enough, the next day, Moe called. "Mr. Obama, the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!" "And what equipment would that be Moe?" Barack asked. "Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and J. R. 's Ford tractor."

Obama sighed. "I must tell you Moe, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke."

"Lord above", said Moe, "I'll be getting back to ya." Sure enough, Moe called the next day. "President Obama, the war is still on! We managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an' modified Jim Bob’s homemade airplane with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, five boys from Fresno, and four boys from Arcola have joined us!" Obama was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. "I must tell you Moe that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. And since we last spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!" "Oh Lord," said Moe, "I’ll have to call you back." Sure enough, Moe called the next day. "President Obama I am sorry to have to tell you that we have had to call off this here war." "I'm sorry to hear that," said Obama. "Why the sudden change of heart?" Well, sir," said Moe, "we all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a few beers, and come to realize that there's just no way we can feed two million prisoners."

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Fixing thanksgiving dinner? Remember when starch is mixed with liquid it can be lumpy. So mash potatoes, in butter first then add milk. For smooth gravy add about a tablespoon of corn starch to the flour and stir in just enough water to make a smooth paste, then stir in more liquid and pour into the turkey drippings.

Fresh vegetables out of the garden make any meal something to be thankful for. As soon as we get a rain, work up that ground because some vegetables grow better in the winter, like carrots, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, English peas etc. Even potatoes can be planted in late January, but you are taking a chance if we get a hard freeze.

I wonder what "hate" would cost per gallon. That is what’s driving our country now. No matter what good is being done its being turned into something else by “spin” or just plain lying. We would shoot ourselves in the foot if it would stop the pace of upward –bound progress.

Being a Black woman, I’ve lived with the every-day fear and terror caused by hatred. So I am accustomed to the hate atmosphere in this country of ours.

However this hate, today’s hate, is a more diabolical hate. The thing most feared has happened. WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT! For some a most unthinkable fact. As Americans we should be proud of this. The President is the most coveted position in the world, I’m told. This did not “just happen” We created a better environment for equality than we thought. We are better people than we realize – really.

Let us stop this “hate fight” and allow our country to become what our Constitution and our Bill of Rights say that it should be. Instead of using the “spin” and the untruths, use the tool that we were given – VOTE! It is written that, “when righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.” Proverbs 28: 12 Helen Horn Scott

FBFWSD#1 Fresno Water Board

The water board doesn’t know the price of the fees being charge to connect. Pres. John Borden says they must follow City Houston ordinance water codes on public safety. The board maintenance department leaders, Chris and Tracey, of Southwest Waters say they follow the codes. There is a waste of taxpayer dollars to install blue pressure tanks connected to resident’s water line in Fresno. The City of Houston doesn't install these tanks nor Teal Run homes which are in Houston’s ETJ as is Fresno.

Taxpayer bonds have paid to install the taps. The water board plans to cutoff and remove water line taps not in use. Southwest Water will charge the water board for this service. Thence, if future residents want to connect, they will have to pay SW Waters about $1500, to re-install taps that were removed from public property. Residents property taxes have paid for this once. If the water tap lines were left in place, a resident would only need to purchase a meter costing about $390. Views of Rodrigo Carreon

FAITH AND CHICKEN

There is a song that says, “Faith is just believing what God says, He will do.”

Do you believe the Bible is totally true, that God created the world, that He made man from the dust of the earth, that we inherited a sin nature from the first man and woman? That God remained true to His Holy nature and made a just way to forgive us by giving His own Son, Jesus Christ, to take our punishment? That Jesus made the blind see, the deaf to hear, calmed the wind and waves, raised the dead, and conquered death after He was crucified? There isn’t the slightest doubt in my mind that all of the above is true. You might say I am a woman of faith. I have a T-shirt that says so.

I admit my faith in every day events leans more to the practical rather than the super natural. Like when our dog, Fleas, had distemper. She was so sick she went blind in one eye and could not retain food. Every morning each one of our kids would pray, “Dear God please let Fleas live.”

No way was that dog going to survive and I didn’t want my children to grow up thinking that God could not answer their prayer so I always prayed If it be thy will let Fleas live. That way when the dog died ....

Funny thing how God works. That night, my husband, Cotton, said to put 1/4 an aspirin in a tiny ball of raw hamburger meat and give it to Fleas every hour. It was hopeless, but I did it anyway. The dog survived.

That was a long time ago. I have had time to mature in my faith since then. Some of my friends rate me with a nine on a scale from 1 to 10. But a chicken showed me how I really rate.

Over the years, I’ve had chickens killed by possums, dogs, etc. This past winter, I only had one chicken left. I kept it safe and locked up in the chicken house. Then I let it out in the daytime and it slept in the chicken house, until one evening I went to shut the door and she was gone. The next morning she laid me another egg, but I could not find where she spent the night, totally unprotected. I prayed, “Dear God take care of me and my chicken tonight.” Every morning I thanked God for his care when that chicken tapped on my window pane.

I told my kids how God was answering my prayer and taking care of that chicken. Then I started worrying. Would they think less of God if I found chicken feathers all over the ground? Winter brings in more wild animals. More worry. The thought occurred, I wouldn’t have to worry about God answering my prayer if I killed that chicken.

Then I dropped to my knees and asked God to forgive me for doubting his ability to take of a chicken.

The Bible says unbelief is evil. (Hebrews 3:12) That chicken showed me just how small my faith really is. Hebrews 11:6 says…”without faith it is impossible to please God.”

That chicken has faithfully laid an egg every day for six months, but more important God has used her to show me just how small my faith really is when I’m not listening to the gentle voice of His Holy Spirit. .For faith, along with love, joy, peace is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22

This morning I thanked God for taking care of me last night and for taking care of my chicken for the past six months. Just then she jumped up on my window sill. God is so good.

Texas Beer Joint Sues Church

A church prayed that a local bar would not expand to increase their business. Work progressed until the week before the grand reopening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground.

The bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church "was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, through direct or indirect actions or means".

The church denied all responsibility to the building's demise. The judge commented, "I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but it appears that we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that now does not."

Calvary’s Cross
It seems like everything we stand for lately has been put into jeopardy including what we believe as Christians. Just recently we were faced with another hit on the crosses that are placed on the hi ways in memory of the loved ones that were killed in different locations. Now there trying to say that it is against the law to place a cross on government property. I thought that we the people are the government. I could understand if it was a hazard are maybe causing a scene. I believe that we should honor and respect our leaders in office as Christians but how far do we let this continue to go on. We have ignored these things long enough. Its time we start stepping up and letting America know that we are a Christian Nation with Godly Principles. So we at First Baptist Fresno are giving away crosses to everyone who wants one. What we are asking you to do is place the cross in your yards and show our communities who we are as Christians. MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SOCIALISTPastor James Hill wanted to know what was my source for last months statement that 70 members of congress were in the Socialist party. An email I had received said the list of names was in the Oct. 2009 issue of Scibd.com the news outlet for the Democrat Socialist Party. I found the July, August, Sept., Nov., and Dec. issues but no Oct issue. I could not find any proof that Sheila Jackson was the vice chairman of a socialist organization.

I did find Sheila and almost the exact same list of names on http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov an official website of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. While everything on this web site sounds wonderful it seems their agenda is for the government to provide for every need. One of their official positions is equal education for everyone by providing before and after school child care, medical and mental care, meals, counseling, tutoring and other services on a federal level.

Forget parents The government will take care of you. They will decide what your child eats, wears and thinks. If that is the government you want, then don’t vote Sheila and others like her out of office.
Early voting starts Oct. 18th.If you register to vote and you are not a U. S. citizen, you may be put in jail for 180 days and fined up to $2,000. Read the Voter Application before signing.

Jim Thompson, Earl Bockel &
Elmer Murphy III
Earl received a 50 year Masonic service award September 16th. Earl joined a lodge in Pearland in 1960. Then a group of 200
men, in 1964 formed the Albert J. De Lange Lodge and met in Clo Lafleur’s red barn. Earl is an Almeda boy and was one of the charter members and the only charter member still living. Over the past 50 years he has helped many men to learn what is required for a man to learn before becoming a Mason. Earl was involved when the lodge built a 40 x 80 metallic building at 5415 Grapevine in 1970.
One thing Earl is solely responsible for is a beautiful gavel he made out of wood from his family’s homestead built in 1844 along the banks of Brays Bayou. By the 1920’s, that area was too crowded to suit his grandfather, so he bought property just inside Harris County along Clear Creek on Hooper Road. Earl and his brother, Dick, grew up next door to their grandparents. As kids they swam in Clear Creek knocking aside the water moccasins. Earl would ride his horse to attend the Almeda Methodist Church. He would hitch his horse up in front of the adjoining feed store. His father, on the way to Houston with the milk from their dairy, would give Earl a ride to school. Before school Earl helped milk 42 cows and load the ten gallon milk cans on the truck. During the winter the dirt road became a long mud hole . The milk was loaded onto a wagon and hauled to the truck which was parked on the gravel road beside the school.

Earl went to Almeda school, then Johnson Jr. High and San Jacinto. He joined the Navy in 1947. His enlistment was up in 1950 but was required to serve another year because of the conflict in Korea. When he got home he proceeded to build a house next door to his father, “Shorty”. The day after he finished the house, w
ith three rooms and a bath, he married Billie Lee Atkinson. They had six children, but experienced the loss of two infants. Later, Earl lost Billie in 1989. Two days after Billie’s death, Daisy Sasser lost her husband. In 1996, they were married. She was by his side when Earl lost his oldest son, John.

Earl had provided for his family by operating his own machine shop until he joined the Harris County Sherriff’s Dept. in 1975. He retired in’92 after 21 years in the homicide division. His partner, Ronnie Philipp, became a close friend and came for Earl’s award ceremony at the lodge.

For 50 years, Earl was a trusted loyal member and served as treasurer for 30 years. Comments made by friends and members meant more than the pin he received. One of the greatest compliments any man could receive
was from Earl’s son, Bob, who said, “My dad is the greatest man I’ve ever known, always there when needed. He is a great man of character, who I look up to and respect.”

Pastor B. T. Taylor Celebrates 18 years
Pastor Taylor and the Abiding
Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate the entire month of October the anniversary of their church. Every Sunday will be a revival with guest ministers and special music working towards an e
xtraordinary program Oct. 31st at 3pm. Visitors are welcomed.

The church organized in 19
92 with 39 members, half were children. Pastor Taylor saw an ad in the Greensheet of a church for sale near Almeda Road for $75,000. He contacted the pastor of the St. Thomas Orthodox Church of India. They agreed that after they had their services, Pastor Taylor and his congregation would meet. The members of St. Thomas stood during their services so Taylor had to bring in some chairs. This went on until St. Thomas had their million dollar building finished in Missouri City. In 1993, Pastor Taylor and his congregation closed the deal with a down payment of $25,000. Since then they have bought 2 1/2 more acres for $34,000, doubled the size of the building, paved the parking lot, and they are debt free. But the best improvement is that they have 300 members on the roll.

Pastor Taylor can relate to the needs of his people. For 28 years he worked full time at Cameron Iron Works traveling from Canada to Venezuela to promote Cameron’s oil field equipment at conventions. In Venezuela, he won a prize for having the best booth. The local news put his picture on the front page, but he had to find someone to read the article written in Spanish.

His bosses trusted him with a million dollar budget. They also overlooked the fact that he was suppose fly out Saturday or Sunday after a convention not Friday, but they knew why he was in a hurry. He was working as a full time pastor for 14 1/2 years at Loyal Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. The only Sunday he missed was when he was in Venezuela.

When Cameron cut down on their operations, Taylor had to take early retirement at the age of 47. In stead of retiring, he went back to college. He had attended TSU on a scholarship, which he had earned as the salutatorian in the small country school of Grapeland, TX. At TSU he met a pretty girl and courted her for two years. They got married on June 3, 1958. A year later, when Taylor was 21, their first son was born:

Now that he was retired and the kids were grown, he could afford to go to Houston Graduate School of Theology where he got a Masters of Arts Degree when he was 55. He is now on the board of trustees at HGST. For his thesis, Pastor Taylor wrote “Baptism from a Black Perspective.” It became a book. He still has a few copies which is in the Library of Congress, 17 libraries, and was sold in book stores.

After planting a church at 14145 Bridgeport across from Almeda Elementary, Taylor went on to get a pastoral counseling degree. Several years later, Leola, his wife of 50 years, died on March 9, 2008. He could have curled up in a dark room, but his family of four boys, two girls, and 12 grandchildren stayed close as well as his church family. So close to him, he could not fall. And he kept busy.“I didn’t have time to have a pity party,” he said.

He is looking forwarded to more church improvements at the spot he loves. A spot where as a country boy, he can appreciate the occasional crow of a chicken. At the age of 72, Pastor Taylor says, “I’ve had a fantastic life,” Pastor Taylor says. “I’m enjoying myself on the way to heaven.”

His favorite verse is I Corinthians 1:3 “Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.”

OBAMA CARE
Green voted FOR even though it will have a drastic effect on our own medical center
Mueller is AGAINST Obama Care. It is also unconstitutional. We need to improve things, but breaking the Supreme Law of the Land is not the way to do it. The many new taxes and regulations rob liberty and destroy freedom.

Robert Andrews from Angola Africa
Our next big challenge will be to place 17.5 million pounds of concrete on top of the first steel roof. The steel roof isn’t strong enough to support the weight of the wet concrete so we’ll give it some extra support with air. Kinda amazing when you think about it. Solid steel and concrete need air to support them. The stuff you can’t see keeps the things you can see from falling apart. Reminds me of Colossians 1:16 & 17: “For by Him all things were created, that are in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

CONGRATULATIONS

Bill and Dahlia Rae Andrews celebrated 63 years of marriage September 12, 2010. If you saw a man and a woman with white hair in their 80’s on a hot day in August sweeping the side road along 521, it was Bill and Dahlia. They were cleaning up the mess the city of Houston left on the access road to their home. An 18-wheeler, city owned truck, had caught fire. The city put the fire out leaving the contents for a heavy duty trash truck to picked up. They picked up the big stuff but left behind glass and small stuff,. Rather than complain Bill and Dahlia just grabbed some brooms. (Then they complained? Maybe a little?)

Utah and Ann Brady celebrated 58 years of marriage on September 16, 2010.

Milton and Peggy Zwahr celebrated 57 years on Sept. 26, 1953. They have three sons: David, Steve and Jon. Three grandchildren: Shonda, Kayla, Steven Jr. and five greats: Ava, Aisha, Dayssi, Tristan, and Lily.
