ONE JOB FINISHES ANOTHER STARTS
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is near completion on the reconstruction and expansion of FM 2234 from Cartwright Rd. to the Fort Bend Tollway. The expansion of the FM 2234 reconstruction project will include a 4-lane highway (curb and gutter section with a raised median).  This year-long project is estimated to be complete by mid-March (weather permitting).
The City of Houston is expected to begin reconstruction and expansion of South Post Oak Rd. from Beltway 8. to FM 2234. The expansion of the South Post Oak Rd. reconstruction project will include  6-lanes from Beltway 8 to West Ridgecreek and reconstruction of the existing 4-lanes from West Ridgecreek to FM 2234. Like most CIP projects, the District K office will host an informational meeting before the start of construction. This project is anticipated to start in April 2015.

FIVE CORNER STREET SIGNS
Have you seen the large easy to read street signs? Five Corners District was created by the Texas legislature in 2007 by House Bill 4134. HB 4795 changed the name to Five Corners which covers most of District K and part of District D in Houston. The function of the district is to provide certain improvements and services to promote the economic health, vitality, and public welfare of the district. Funds to accomplish improvements are provided by the businesses within the district paying 10 cents on  every $100 evaluation of their property.
In 2014, the district removed 600 graffiti, 26,900 lbs of trash, and contracted with SMC Logistics to report 1,100 street light outages to CenterPoint. To assist in keeping the district clean, report litter, graffiti, and light outages call 311  or 713-595-1244 or go online to AGoodlow@5CornersDistrict.org
Nine board members appointed by the mayor and city council are responsible for how the money should be used to best enhance the area which has a population of 57,000 residents. The board members meet once a month at 12 noon on the 3rd Friday of the month at the Multi-Center at 3810 W. Fuqua. The meetings are open to the public. For more info check out their website at 5CornersDistrict.org

STATE OR FEDERAL
According to Alabama Supreme Court Judge, Roy Moore, the Constitution gives no jurisdiction whatsoever to any branch of the federal government to dictate marriage policy to the states. "Nothing in the United States Constitution grants the federal government the authority to redefine the institution of marriage." The authority to dictate marriage policy to the states is absent from the list of powers "We the People" granted to the central government in Article I, Section 8. In fact, the word "marriage" does not occur anywhere in the Constitution. You can read it front to back, back to front, upside down and in Sanskrit and you will find nary a mention of marriage anywhere in there, including the 14th Amendment, which was about slavery, not marriage, Judge Moore writes. (On top of that, homosexual conduct was a crime everywhere in the United States at the time the 14th Amendment was enacted.)
All this means is that the issue of the definition of marriage is reserved to the states and the states alone. See the Bill of Rights, Amendment 10 which says: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the Sates respectively, or to the people.  Moore writes, "As Chief Justice, I will continue to recognize the Alabama Constitution and the will of the people (81%) overwhelmingly expressed in the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment."   I stand with you to stop judicial tyranny and any unlawful opinions issued without constitutional authority."
Unelected, 44 federal judges have imposed their own view of morality on 21 states against the laws voted on by the majority of the people, ignoring our Constitution

THE OLD MULE

You heard of the old mule that fell in a well? The farmers couldn’t figure how to get him out. Knowing he would stink up a storm when he died, they decided to bury him right there. A big pile of manure was near by so they started shoveling it in on top of that poor mule. Instead of getting frantic, he stamped the manure down. Every shovel of manure brought him up a little higher. When he stuck his head up out of that well, the farmers almost had a heart attack.

When life is dumping one pile of manure on us after another, our faith in the goodness and sovereignty of God will give us victory as we climb up over the trials of life trusting in his word. God says in Isaiah 41:10, Fear not , I am with you I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yeh, I will help you. I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Romans 8:28 We know that all things work together for good to them who love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 8:31 If God be for us who can be against us. James 1:2 says, Consider it all joy when you fall into various tests, knowing that the trial of your faith produces patience...that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing.

Be as smart as that old mule.

Feedback from Polly Francis
My view is similar to Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son: the White House or President Obama refuses to recognize the terrorist as Islamic Terrorists because of his heritage,  grandmother, father and where he  was raised. His early years were in Indonesia. He cannot come to grips when designating our enemy and how we can eradicate them.   All the news anchors cannot understand why he will not recognize this fact and it is so simple and in our face.   We could discuss this issue forever, but in the meantime ISIS is forming sleeper cells all over Europe and in our own USA.

 FEBRUARY ISSUE

Arcola Police Chief

According to Arcola’s city manager, Chief Bell is the best Police Chief in Fort Bend County. In 2012, Fred Bell received his Masters Degree with a 4.0 G.P.A. from Texas State University. A native of San Antonio, he retired this past August after serving 23 years in law enforcement, the last 17 of which were in smaller communities in the Austin area. That retirement lasted until Dec. 1st when he accepted the call from Arcola.“I believe God put me here,” he says.

Chief Bell likes challenges. His first challenge is to make policy changes within his office so past problems will not occur in the future. Right now there are six full time officers and one Reserve. After an effective policy is in place, he plans on bringing in more Reserve Officers as he aims toward serving 1700 Arcola residents. Arcola is a small city with lots of opportunity and growth. His specialty is preparing a police department for growth which he did near Austin where his wife and their two youngest children still live.

The Chief promised his daughters (a senior and a junior in high school) he would not uproot them until they graduated. For now he is living with his sister in the Almeda area, seeing his family every other weekend. His wife was a sheriff’s deputy so she understands.

Chief Bell says, “I hope council and the community will trust me enough to give me the time and resources necessary to give them the police department they deserve and want.”

WHAT ARE ISLAM JIHADISTS ACCOMPLISHING?

It is evident jihadist have killed thousands who don’t agree with them. One result is that millions of Muslims risk death by turning away from the Islamic faith. In 2013, 33 million Egyptians stood up against the brutality of the Islamic Brotherhood. Now four million Muslims have become atheists and one to seven million Muslims have embraced Christianity, just in Egypt. Christianity was founded on the blood of the martyrs. Plant a kernel of corn; it dies, and life springs forth, producing hundreds of kernels. Jesus taught us not to fear those who can put us to death but are unable to kill the soul. Matt. 10:28 Don’t be afraid of Muslims. Love them.

Councilman Larry Green aims to green up and clean up District K. On Jan. 24th volunteers helped plant 15 gallon trees in every vacant spot between Anderson Road and Orem in the Hiram Clarke esplanade. In 2015 these trees look like poles with a few leaves but in time they will look like the tree in the background. Quite a contrast to the trees planted at the end of Hiram Clarke.

When Edna Buell stepped out the door of her home, the trees her husband planted from acorns were shorter than she was but taller than any other trees between Anderson Road and Alum Road where a clump of Crepe Myrtle trees grew. Before 1929, Texas was an open range, meaning cattle were free to go anywhere. The trees that survived were fenced in. According to the notes of a 1859 survey, a few trees existed on Clear Creek.

Edna’s husband, Adelbert, wanted his legacy to be the two rows of oaks he planted along Anderson. Fences didn't protect the trees from progress as most of the huge oaks were cut down.

TALK TO ME PLEASE

I really do want to know you better but right now I need help with a big decision. Please help me to make the best choice. You know how impatient I am, so please give me an answer soon and if at all possible during the TV commercial. I’ll hit the mute button so I won’t be distracted.

“Thou shall have no other gods before me.”

Lord, did you just put that thought in my head? I already know the ten commandments. Besides I don’t worship the TV. I won’t even turn it on tomorrow. Except for the news. I need to know what is going on in the world.

“Then why ask ME for guidance. The TV will give you plenty of advice, even during commercials.”

Ok Lord. I’m wrong. Forgive me not putting you first. I really do want to know You better.

“Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity and quicken Thou me in Thy way.” Psalm 119:37

Correction: Tom Maples was born in 1939.

Almeda Moe

Moe’s son, Junior, went to school. The teacher asked the children to name their favorite animal. Junior replied, “Fried chicken.” The teacher said that was not funny and sent him to the principal. At home Moe explained to Junior that the teacher was probably a member of PETA and they love animals very much. Junior said, “I do too. Especially chicken, pork, and beef.”

The next day the teacher asked Junior what his favorite live animal was. He said chicken. She asked why. He said because they are good fried. She sent him to the principal. Later, Junior told Moe,“I don't understand. You tell me to be honest, but my teacher gets mad when I am.

The next assignment was to tell what famous person they admired the most Junior said, "Colonel Sanders." Guess where he is now...

2nd Annual Awards Banquet
South Houston Concerned Citizen’s Coalition

While the event held Jan. 24th at the Fountain Life Center was only the second award banquet of SHCCC, it was organized in 1993 as CSCCC then incorporated in 1998 as SHCCC covering an area between Beltway 8 to Holmes Road and from Hwy. 288 to Chimney Rock, pretty much the area that once was considered part of the town of Almeda.

SHCCC is an alliance of 24 civic clubs and homeowners assoc. They worked to expand So. Post Oak , promote shelters at all bus stops, renovate parks and worked to get the Multi-Service Center and the new Vinson Library on W. Fuqua. Many local politicians and those who work hard in the Super Neighborhood 40 enjoyed the event. Keynote speaker was Texas State Senator –District 13 Rodney Ellis. Sen. Ellis told of living in Houston where Alma Allen was his 3rd grade teacher. Others in attendance were U. S. Rep. Al Green, City Council members Larry Green and Michael Kubosh, and Harris Co. Attorney Vince Ryan. Vivian Harris presented ten awards to those who for various accomplishments have worked to improve the community.

LOOK UP

A buzzard in a 6x8 open-top pen will not attempt to fly as it always begins a flight with a run of 10 to 12 feet. A bat cannot fly from a level place but is helpless on a flat surface. A bumblebee dropped into an open tumbler will die there as it will try to get out thru the side. Like a bee, we struggle with all our problems and frustrations, looking around us for help or looking to the past when all we have to do is look up!
