October 2013

Gertrude Wagner  has worked in the cosmetic department at Walgreens for 31 years. Is that newsworthy? It is if you are 93 years old and your arthritis is so severe you can’t stand up straight. Three days a week Wagner is on her feet for eight hours a day pushing a cart to restock the shelves and re-pricing marked down items. Does she need the money? “Not at all. I work because it is a pleasure to work. It helps keep me active.”
Active like getting up at 4am so she has time to read her Bible and pray for one hour. Then getting to work early so she can get a good parking space as she doesn’t want to use the disability spots that a customer might need. After work she spends more time reading and studying for the lesson she teaches every Sunday to the adult ladies class.
Sitting around the house every day doesn’t appeal to a woman who has worked all her life. Growing up in Corsicana, she worked on a farm. When she was 19, she met and married a truck driver for Joe D. Hughes in Pierce Junction where they raised their son. In 1955, they bought a house in Brookhaven. Although they moved, Gertrude managed to keep her long time friends by following  her church in Pierce Junction to Almeda, then to Minnetex, then to 14011 South Freeway. You just might say she is loyal to her church and her job. A job which makes it possible for her to contribute more to her church and support missionaries.

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN NO BIG DEAL
When the government shutdown in 1977, 800,000 federal employees were put on furlough, which was less than 1/5 of the 4,476 million federal employees that kept on working.

AZKO NOBEL
On Sept. 18th, fire trucks, Fort Bend and Harris Co. sheriff vehicles, and other emergency personnel were at the Azko Nobel Chemical Plant. It was a drill so first responders would know the lay out of the plant and how to respond in case of a real emergency.
According to Dan Trevino, the Safety Manager, Azko Nobel is an OSHA STAR, meaning they are in the top five per cent of  all the chemical plants as far as following the Voluntary Protection Program. Last year OSHA spent three weeks on site auditing every aspect of the plant before giving them a Star rating. Not every chemical plant would invite such close scrutiny.
NALCO CHAMPION
Plant Manager Chris Gonzales, says they are expanding and have bought the church property across the street from their plant in Fresno. More on that later.
ALL IN THE FAMILY

Freddie Robinson is grooming the oldest of three daughters to eventually take over South Post Oak Recycling Center. He has put in a minimum of 60 hours a week for almost 20 years at his business. They have prided themselves on being a family owned and operated business
Robinson started working when he was 12 years old and is nearing 30 years in the scrap metal and recycling industry. His experience prior to owning his own business included working for Cameron Iron and Reynolds Aluminum Recycling. It was in May of 1994 that he decided to tackle the demand of entrepreneurship. Ten years later, after launching  1 the South Post Oak location he opened another site on Holmes Road. He is starting to think about retirement and when asked what the next chapter of life looks like he replied, “I’d like to work more in my church and do more social work. “As far as total retirement,” he says, “I’d probably die if I quit.”
As his daughter, Brandi Harleaux, learns the business he hasn’t stepped off the gas in terms of his dedication to the company; still putting in 60 plus hours weekly.
Brandi received a masters in business psychology/consulting early in her career and recently went back to school to get an M.B.A. Prior to joining SPORC she was an executive in several Fortune 500 companies including Disney, Northrop Grumman and Target.

Brandi’s focus for this first year is to continue learning this industry and business. She hopes to take the business to a new level, but  says, “A lot of things will stay the same as my Dad has done a great job growing the business and being active in the community. I will work to continue positioning SPORC as the scrap metal and electronics recycling center of choice for the greater Houston area.  Customer service has and always will be a top priority for us. I think some customers forget what customer service is because it’s becoming rare with today’s businesses, but they will remember and know what it is at South Post Oak Recycling.  We have numerous customers that constantly say “I trust y’all and you treat me right –here; it’s always a great experience. The experience here is not only through customer service but also by offering top prices, convenient locations, clean facilities, accurate calibrated scales and speedy service.”
You will feel what being a valued customer and treated like family is at either South Post Oak Recycling Center locations. Bring your scrap metal and electronics  for a great experience.

MY BRAIN  On the left side of my brain there is nothing right and on the right side there is nothing left?
Is that why I have so much trouble with this computer?

Is the Bible the Inspired Word of God?
You Decide
What is so special, so unique about the Bible that Christians believe it is literally the inspired word of God? To answer that question first recognize that the Bible is actually a collection of 66 books which were written by 40 different authors. These 40 authors were shepherds, fishermen, kings, prophets, one doctor, a tax collector etc. Most of these authors never knew one another personally as the 66 books were written over a period of 1500 years in three different languages: Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic and on three different continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. The 66 books are a variety of poetry, history, prophecy, letters and so on.
Think about it: 66 books, written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in 3 different languages, on 3 different continents and they share a common storyline - the creation, fall, and redemption of God's people; a common theme - God's universal love for all of humanity; and a common message -  salvation is available to all who repent of their sins and commit to following God with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength. In addition to sharing these commonalities, these 66 books contain no historical errors or contradictions. Although people think they have found an error but as they learn more they realize there is no mistake.
If you do not believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, I challenge you to go to any library in the world, choose any library you like, and find 66 books written by 40 different authors, over 1,500 years, in 3 different languages, written on 3 different continents. However, they must share a common storyline, a common theme, and a common message, with no historical errors or contradictions. Humanly impossible? Even using computers?
If it is not humanly possible then just maybe the writers of the Bible were inspired.

ACLU KNOWS THE LAW
The ACLU knows it is not against the law to leave Bibles in the school for children to pick up, but they still threaten schools with a lawsuit. The legal team of Alliance Defending Freedom stands ready to defend schools who follow the law. NAVIGATORS AND ASSISTERS SCAM
According to recent news reports, scam artists are calling individuals and asking for information to sign them up for their “ObamaCare card,” They are asking seniors for their personal information to verify their Medicare and Social Security status and going door-to-door threatening people with prison time if they do not sign up on the spot. Be careful.
WE THE PEOPLE
Does it make any difference if we voice our opinions to congress? Recently, our representatives and senators were flooded with calls. Only two out of 500 calls approved of taking action in Syria. Seems to have made a difference. Enough people bombarded the house of representatives that they voted to defund Obama care. We the people are letting our representatives know what we want more so than ever before. Pete Olson’s office worker said they are getting first time callers. If you don’t know the name of your representative call the capitol switchboard at 202 224 3121, give them your zip code and they will connect you to your rep. A toll free # is 1 866-220 0044. If you live in Almeda, Fresno, or Arcola you are probably in Al Green or Pete Olson’s district. Rosharon is in Randy Weber’s district. Local # for Green is 281 575 1635, for Olson it is 281-485 4855.
WHAT ABOUT THE SENATE? . Sen. Ted Cruz  says, “DC needs to listen. No more fake fights.” There will be a lot of talk about raising the debt ceiling in October. In the last four years they have raised the debt  so much that each household is $43,000 deeper in debt. They talk about paying our debts. If you borrow a dollar that is worth a dollar but then you print more money and pay that dollar back, with a dollar worth 75 cents, are you really paying your debt? Whatever the issue, Ted Cruz is right when he says DC needs to listen to we the people. Cruz just spent 21 hours and 19 minutes trying to convince senators to do that. His # is 713 653 3456. Sen. Cornyn’s # is 713 572 3337. To voice your opinions call early as later the lines will stay busy.
 WHAT IS A MAN?
According to Matt Walsh’s, Men are loyal. Men are honest. Men respect and honor women. A man goes out and finds one woman, and he vows to protect and love her for the rest of his life. A man would never betray that vow. Even the weakest and most cowardly man — if he is a man at all — would die for the woman he loves. Type in Matt Walsh Blog to get some of his other views.

NEED A PROFESSIONAL RESUME?
Following is part of a resume we provided for a fine citizen in Almeda after learning of their past work history.
1.Maintenance and cleaning of a commercial building while overseeing the care of organic material.
(This person had the job of washing out the dairy barn. Polite folks would refer to the organic material as cow manure.)
2. Processed the highest quality of food recommended by nutritious experts for maintaining a healthy diet low in cholesterol, and especially demanded for special occasions.
(This person dressed two chickens for Sunday dinner and anytime there was a funeral.)
3. Capable of terminating any unproductive aspect of an endeavor if it is hindering underlying goals.
(You guessed it—pulling weeds out of the flower bed.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Theresa Bailey will celebrate her 90th year October 4th. Now she can get around in her mini van she feels like celebrating.
A late wish for a happy birthday to Christy Seymore turned 94 on July 23rd.  He called to see if that Proposed Amendment 28 was a joke as he thought it was too good to be true. It is not a joke that the U. S. Congress must only pass laws that applies to them the same as it applies to us. The only way it will come true is if enough people demand it through their state representatives. Any amendment to the Constitution has to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. Just keep the idea of Amendment 28 floating around and eventually it might gain enough steam for candidates  to pay attention. Christy might have to live another 94 years to see it.

A LAW FOR DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS
Rand Paul wants to outlaw all exemptions even for members of Congress, making sure taxpayers and lawmakers are treated equally under the Affordable Care Act. His planned constitutional amendment would ensure that federal employees do not get special exemptions from the law of the land. Sounds like Amendment 28. Maybe Christy Seymore will see it happen.
Before this amendment passes about 200 million people would have to demand it.

FEEDBACK A teenager’s perspective:. Most people blame God for all the bad stuff that happens to them, or they say it's Him trying to teach them a lesson. They have no idea that it's by their faith and the Word of God that things are changed, that God can move. God will not move outside of His word, and in Revelation it says they shall overcome (the enemy) by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony. So many people try to blame God for bad things that happen to them, ignorant of the fact that A. it's the enemy and B. they were given victory over those things by Jesus's sacrifice. Jer. 29:11 says For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and NOT to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. It just makes me sad to see people that end up getting mad at God for something He never planned for them instead of turning to Him as their comforter and as their Rock.
Emma Andrews

"Mom, how are you?"“ Not too good, said Mom. I've been very weak.” "Why are you so weak?" “I haven't eaten in 38 days." "That's terrible. Why haven't you eaten?" “ I didn't want my mouth to be filled with food if you should call.”
ALMEDA MOE
Moe took his family to church to have their baby christened. On the way home Moe Jr. sobbed in the back seat. Moe asked him what was the problem but Moe Jr. just cried harder. Finally when they got home Moe asked again and Moe Jr. blurted out, “The preacher said    that me and my baby brother should be brought up in a Christian home. I want to stay with you and mama.”
