ST. John Baptist Church

Founded in 1869

Surrounded on three sides by new expensive homes on Oilfield Road, the little church is hanging on. In 1869 the owners of the Dew Plantation gave two acres of land to their former slaves for a church and school. The location reportedly changed several times until 1935 when George Dew gave a deed for two acres at 6715 Oilfield Road DeWalt, a town absorbed by Missouri City.

In 2006, arsonist set fire to the church. For a time they met on the front porch as the rear of the sanctuary was badly damaged and the fellowship hall destroyed. They meet inside now using a generator and portable restrooms. The church is allowed to keep the land as long as they continue their services. Recently other church members, who remember how their grandparents attended school in the little building have come along to help the eight elderly faithful members.

Pastor David Fisher would love to see visitors and new members. Call him at 713 738 1808 or Sec. Rosa Graves at 281 431 2648.

FIRST AID FOR BURNS

Run cool water for five minutes on burns that don’t require immediate doctor’s attention such as third degree burns. Egg whites on a raw wound could introduce salmonella. Read what Snopes has to say about not using remedies used in the past when nothing better was available.

HIS STORY
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was made flesh and lived among us and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

In him was life and the life was the light of men, but the darkness comprehended it not. He came to his own but they did not receive him. And being found in the appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God has given Him the name above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. As many as receive him, He gives the right and power to become the children of God. At his death the veil that separated man from God was torn apart. John 1:1,14; John 3:16, John 1:4,5,11;Philippians 2:8,9,10,11; John 1:12; Matthew 27:51

WATCHDOGS CONVERGE ON SCHOOL
The principal at Austin Parkway Elementary was delighted that a record number of Watch DOGS or Dads of Great Students turned out to provide positive male role models, demonstrate by their presence that education is important and provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.

There are 4,049 schools in 46 states that have a WATCHDOG program. Dads and other father figures volunteer at least one day a year. A 51 minute training call prepares you for the job. Children whose fathers spend a day at the school feel very loved and special as their father reads to a class or helps kids board a bus. Go to www.fathers.com/watchdogs for more info. Check with your child’s school.

Comment from blogspot: History of Pierce Junction Oil Field Community: My grandmother is Florrie Mae Ammon Parrott - she ran the Gulf café around 1930-1936 or so. My grandfather Luther (Luke) Parrott was a roughneck. My dad (Howard Parrott) an elementary kid at the time repaired the workers shoes and would sew torn clothing when the workers would come in to eat meals. My dad eventually worked in the oil field after or just before WWII. Thanks for your info... Glenn

HAPPY 95TH BIRTHDAY

Rose Buell Andrews has lived 95 years in the Almeda area. Born on Anderson Road at a time when the oak trees at Yes Academy were no taller than she was, Rose could look see the trees on Alum Road.

She was one of four high school graduates in 1938 from Almeda High School. After Rose married Jim Andrews she moved west-about a mile west of South Post Oak.

Times were tough but she knew how to live without much money. Canning the vegetables they grew, even making catsup. Besides a half an acre of gladiolas, Rose raised orchids. A happy, creative, busy stay at home mom, Rose still keeps up with what goes on in the world. And tries to keep up with her 16 grandchildren, umpteen greats and over a dozen great greats.
