 SUE HARRISON HUGHES

When Sue allowed her picture to be taken, she warned the photographer not to fall. She was asked, “What if you and your tractor tip over?”
Her reply, “It hasn’t happened yet.”
As the ditch gets deeper towards Anderson Road, she holds onto the seat to keep from sliding off. She has gotten stuck.            Most of the time she manages but once a gentleman driving down Anderson saw her predicament and helped her out. Other times a neighbor helps her. Sue says, “Thank God for good neighbors.”
Sue had to learn to mange a long time ago when her husband, Billy, was no longer able to take care of the yard. Actually she learned a lot of the things boys learn, growing up in Almeda, as she was the middle daughter of three girls with no brothers.
She loves yard work but her grown children, Chuck and Janice, her grandchildren, friends and neighbors love her cooking. You have probably met her in the grocery store early in the morning. She doesn’t know a stranger.
Sue is one of the few people who never left Almeda. She has lived here more than 71 years within a mile of her first home in Almeda. She was ten when her family lived in the Almeda hotel which had been converted into apartments on Broadhurst. Sue has seen major changes since then.
One more change is coming. Her children are planning on grounding her. No more climbing a ladder to clean out the gutters and no more mowing the ditch! But she is only 81.

Air Quality in the Houston Region
Steve Smith, Technical Advisor for Houston Regional Monitoring (HRM) spoke to the Akzo Noble Nalco Champion CAP about the status and trends in area air quality. HRM’s monitors are located where industry operates, along side of those operated by the City of Houston, TCEQ and Harris County. HRM and TCEQ collect samples in canisters and chromatography. By using a $100,000 camera they can detect even a small amount of gas fumes (chromatography.)
HRM scientists conduct studies to provide data to use and evaluate effective control strategies for improving air quality while maintaining the economic viability of Houston’s industry.
Smith reported that Houston attains five of the six EPA standards. The only one of the six not meeting the standard is Ozone. Over the past decade, there has been a significant decrease in ozone standard violations. Ozone is a respiratory irritant that is formed by the reaction of NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen from sources of combustion in plants, engines, etc.) and from VOCs in the presence of sunlight. (Volatile Organic Compounds come from almost anything you can smell such as gasoline). Summer time is the “ozone season.” The only monitor that continues to register high numbers of ozone is located at the Manvel Croix Park.
Smith said that automobiles and natural sources, plus the area’s geography and meteorology combine with Houston’s ship channel industry and population to make Houston a good incubator for ozone. With great effort to address the actual causes of ozone, the area is very near attaining the 1997, 8-hour standard. Population, production, and economy have grown, yet air quality has improved. Through effort and investment, Houston has achieved an 87% reduction in the concentrations of VOCs over the past 27 years. All area monitors are below the federal standard for Particulate Matter, another lung irritant.
Smith concluded by saying that Houston has the most extensive air monitoring network in the country. HRM has a key role in monitoring regional air quality in Houston and providing data to demonstrate that the air in the region has improved dramatically and continues to do so. Go to Houston Quality Air.com web site and get current info or call TCEQ Region 12 Air Section Help Line at 713)767-3714 and they will email you the link so you can just click on it and register to have updates on ozone levels in your area sent to you.
Community Advisory Panel (CAP) meetings at Azko Noble and Nalco/Champion chemical plants are very informative. For information about meetings contact Mary Jane Naquin at 713-993-9317 or email m.j.naquin@argolink.net
Among others at the recent CAP meeting, was Almeda’s principal, Max Pope and previous principal, Beverly Cage. Mrs. Cage is working at the HISD charter school, Energized for Excellence Academy, a school near her home. She observes teachers in K and First grade, conducts in service training and works with gifted and talented students. “I enjoy not being the boss,” she says, although she admits that her husband claims she is still the boss at home.

NEW AGE—OLD IDEA

At the core of most religions is the attitude of ‘I can do certain things and earn my entrance into heaven.’ Now that idea has evolved into I can become like God or I can become a god and create heaven.
When Satan tempted Eve to disobey God and eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he said, “You shall be like God, (or as gods) knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:5
Then she convinced Adam that the fruit would make them wise. When he disobeyed God, sin entered in and death by sin which was passed on to their children and on to the present generation. We are born with that inherited nature to seek whatever we want regardless of what God says.
So it should be no surprise that as our nation turns away from the words of God given to us in the Bible, people will seek and accept various means to be guided in life and live apart from God and His ways. In effect they are working toward becoming their own God and worshipping self.
Most people would denounce witchcraft or sorcery but books on positive thinking, self esteem, self help books are good, right? They can be but if they promote self and lead to worship of self instead of seeking God’s glory, and depending on Him, those techniques and hundreds of other ways man has thought up will lead to separation from God and His goodness.
Nine out of ten people will say you have to be good to go to heaven. But the Bible says by grace you are saved and that not of yourselves. It is a gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8&9. That gift was given when the one and only Son of God, Jesus Christ, took the punishment for the world. But a gift only helps those who receive it. What are we saved from? We are saved from the power and penalty of our own desire to live our own way rather than the way God our Creator desires us to live. (Matt. 1:21) The power of those desires we know. The penalty is eternal separation from the giver of life.
For Christians to keep from being caught up into the religion of becoming god, we must know what the Bible teaches. The world is listening to educated men who are influenced by Satan just like Eve was. What can they expect? Read II Thessalonians 2: 1-2.
Kent Wistrand grew up in the Almeda area, but has spent the last 60 years as a missionary working in Mexico. Not many 85 year old men recovering from by-pass heart surgery would drive 2,600 miles to work. In Kent’s newsletter he relates events to praise God for and some of the dangers he faced because of floods, mud slides, opposition, etc. If ever a man has earned the right to retire he has, but he believes we should,
Hang in there         because,        HE hung there for us.

 BEAUTIFUL ORANGES

How nice it is to step out in your back yard and pick an orange and oh so sweet when it fully ripens on the tree. Back in the 1890’s and the first decade in the 1900’s settlers from up north flocked to Almeda when developers sent brochures of ripe oranges growing on trees. Later it was rumored that those oranges in the photo had been tied to green hedges on the old Worlin place off of Fellows Road.
At any rate farmers sick of the cold in Iowa and Ohio moved to the sunny south where Hooper and Hicks, from Texas, and Higbee of Illinois drew up a 250 acre town site. At the suggestion of Dr. Willis King they named the town Almeda, after his daughter. King had an adjoining planned orchard of 366 acres on the southeast of the town. West of the 250 acre town was the Fruitland addition with deed restrictions.
In 1909, E. L. Jones bought ten acres for $750, at 7% interest. His deed required him to fence it in, plow five acres, and plant at least two acres in orange or fruit trees. He was also required to build a habitable residence and other buildings within a year of the sale. Several habitable houses popped up in the Almeda area. Habitable meant a roof, four walls and a door. Floors and windows were nice. Another building was required since they didn’t have indoor plumbing. Some habitable houses were often referred to as shotgun houses. You could stand in the front door and shoot a shotgun out the back door before the pellets would scatter inside the house.
Jones could look around at the homes of earlier settlers and see the orange trees growing almost as high as their hopes. But all those hopes were dashed in 1911 when a hard freeze killed any vision of raising citrus fruit commercially.
Empty shotgun houses dotted the prairie as many settlers moved to what they hoped would be greener, sunnier pastures. Only once has it got as cold as it did in 1911. Citrus trees do quite well in Almeda, Fresno and Arcola if they are protected during a freeze.

Fake Websites

According to John McAfee, the founder of the McAfee Antivirus, the way the Obama care web site is set up, makes it possible for fake websites be set up to fool people to think they’re signing up for Obamacare. Anybody can put up a web page and claim to be a broker for this system. There is no central place to go and find out if the web site you pick is a fake or official, Any hacker can put a website up, make it look extremely competitive and request your Social Security number, your birth date, and your health issues. Identity theft paradise.

 YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK

Rep. Pete Olson, announced that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has agreed to investigate the use of federal funds by Planned Parenthood, which has received $542 million in taxpayer dollars during 2011 while performing a record of 333,964 abortions. Planned Parenthood reported excess revenues exceeding $87 million and net assets of more than $1.2 billion.
They paid over $4 million to settle claims of Medicaid fraud. While claiming to support the interests of women, Planned Parenthood has also shown an apparent willingness to support the sex trafficking of minor girls and allegedly turned a blind eye to unsafe and unsanitary conditions, Seventy-two Members of Congress who made the request for a GAO investigation asked the watchdog to specify the amount, source, and expenditure of federal tax dollars by Planned Parenthood and five other organizations that provide or promote abortion here and abroad.
Earlier this year, Black and Vitter introduced the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, which would remove federal taxpayer support for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers under Title X family planning grants. Campaign money sent in to Congress by those organizations who opposed the bill HR61 was 12% more than those in favor.
The above information was taken from the Heritage website.
Regardless of how you feel about abortion is it right for the government to subsidize a business with tax dollars? You say it is done all the time and that may be true, but is it right?

FEEDBACK: What is Mary Anderson, Arcola’s previous mayor doing?    "I took early retirement, after 35 years, and I am having a great time. I spend a lot of time with my mom we go out to lunch several times during the week. I am in the process of doing a complete remodel of my home and I am looking for someone to take music lessons from. I am just happy to be able to do a lot things that I could not do if I was working. And I thank God that my health is a good as it is. How sweet it is. HA HA  HA"

Only the Beginning

Just the beginning when we first believe
That Jesus died on the cross for you & me
He’s waiting to guide us to things on earth
That gives our lives new meaning & rebirth
He is always there to lead with His guiding hand
Because He knows we need His love in this sinful land.
Take hold of the supernatural Power of God,
And go tell all of His wonderful plan
To redeem us back to His waiting Hand.
Thought for the Day: Isn’t it great when you put your whole trust in God thru Jesus. We never have to worry about our future because He never defaults on His promise.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path.

Almeda Moe

Moe took his mom out for breakfast. She ordered the Seniors Special with two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast for $2.99. “But I don’t want the eggs,” she told the waitress. 'Then, I'll have to charge you $3.49 because you're ordering a la carte,' the waitress said.
“You mean I'll have to pay for not taking the eggs?' 'YES!' replied the  waitress.. “I'll take the special then,” said Moe’s mom.
'How do you want your eggs?' the waitress asked.
'Raw and in the shell,' she replied.
After breakfast, Moe’s mom took the eggs home and baked cookies.

 WELCOME HOME TED CRUZ

Hundreds of people stood for two hours crammed into a warehouse to welcome the man they believe fought hard in Washington DC to keep the promises he made to Texans.
The leader of the event at the King Street Patriots headquarters was Catherine Englebrecht, a country girl raised in Richmond, TX. Katherine looked fine in a plain pair of blue jeans as she spoke before national news cameras and a group of people who are disappointed with the established Democrats and Republicans. Katherine said, “I don’t want to see my children’s future sacrificed because  those we elected don’t put it all on the line.”
As a leader of Houston’s local Teaparty, Katherine has ignited the fire in the belly of the common voter who is tired of a government taking more control of our lives every day. In spite of the fact that Cruz’s primary opponent was better known and had six dollars of campaign money for every dollar Cruz had, he won because the majority of Texans agree with the policy of less government and less taxes and believed he would fight for them.
After Ted’s father led the group in a word of prayer and pledge to the flags, Texas flag too, Ted was introduced by M. Berry, a local radio announcer. Senator Cruz could barely make his way through the crowd amid the wild cheers.
He didn’t talk about what he had done but what the people across the nation accomplished by connecting with their congressional leaders such as: no action was taken in Syria, amnesty was set aside, and gun control laws were defeated. The House of Representatives listened to the people as they tried to defund Obama care, unlike the Senate.
When asked about the mean things that were being said about him, Ted replied, “Who cares. I don’t work for the party bosses, I work for the people of Texas.”
